Thomas the Tank Engine — How Thomas and Friends Got Their BIG Break!

thomas the tank engineAs you undoubtedly know, Thomas the thank engine popped on the scene as a British television show in 1984, although his origins begin further back in time.

Thomas and all his friends are based on a series of children’s books, first published in 1945 by Wilbert Awdry.

In 1972 Awdry passed his wright of passage onto Christopher… his son. By ”1996″ Chris  had written 14 additional child inspiring episodes.

Christopher Awdry, not only took over the honors of continuing the series, Christopher is actually the individual who inspired the series conception.

In 1942 Chris was a vibrant two year old boy who unfortunately was stricken with measles. While recovering, Chris’s father charmed out nursery rhymes to his son. One of the little guys favorite rhymes went a little something like this:

“Early in the morning Down at the station all the engines standing in a row.”
“Along comes the driver, pulls the lever, Puff, puff! Chuff, chuff… Off we go!”

As Christopher heard the rhyme again and again – he began to ask his papa questions? Where is the train papa? Can I see it?

In order to answer his beloved son Christopher’s questions, Rev. Wilbert Vere Awdry (1911-1997) created a fictional locomotive named Edward the Blue Engine. As the questions continued so did the short stores and characters.

Eventually Thomas came along and the book series took off. Thomas and friends where a sensation to kids and adults around the globe.  Eventually model train manufactures like Marklin stepped in.

They’ve brought Thomas and his friends to life and made them available to train lovers around the world!
