Founded on July 1, 1986 CSX Transportation was formed as a renaming of the Seaboard System Railroad and Chessie System, Inc. into one company. On 
August 31, 1987 another familiar name fell subject to CSX control.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which had absorbed the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad also merged with CSX.
The joining had been started in 1980 with the combining of Chessie System and Seaboard to form the CSX Corporation.
