HO Scale FM H10-44 Diesel – War Hero and Civilian Workhorse
The mid 40s' brought a new diesel drinking locomotive to the rails. The FM H10-44 was first conceived in the mid 40s' when there was a need for yard switchers and diesel chaperons for light weight rail cars. The early models… also known as Model 38s' had a quiet, efficient 300hp power plant. Fairbanks & Morse Built this welterweight (Model 38) to pull light duty around the yard and hall lighter cars.
In "41" production shifted to the needs of the Navy as WWII amerced. The sea fairing boys of the Navy gathered up many of the 300hp diesel blocks… not the whole engine I might ad, just the 5" x 6" six cylinder power plants as they proved to be notoriously quiet. This was perfect in the eyes of the men serving on diesel powered subs. A quiet diesel piston pounder was perfect for dodging radar 10 phathums down!
In 1944 FM cranked out its' first of many H10-44s' They where the result of years of first rate operations by the model 38s' …the best of the best you could say. These new rail dogs where stronger faster and sleeker… if you call an almost perfect rectangle sleek, which in this case… we do!
By the way, she derived her name H10-44 from being 1000hp and built in 1944. The first 44 built has been refurbished and is still in operation.
