“WAIT!” Don’t Drop that Decoder in Position Just Yet – Test it First

If you have any problems with your decoder after installation it may be that the decoder was no good to begin with. Now, this is not normally the case although we at classy model trains believe in testing any piece of equipment before operation.
If you have a drop in place decoder, testing will require you clamp your (alligator) monster clips to leads on the decoder. Their are attachments designed to assist you in finding the connections. To make this an easy task, the NMRA has harnesses designed for just such a task.
When ever you are finished hooking up your test leads, fasten your gator clips to the rails, grab your throttle and pretend as if you where conducting normal operations. If the Christmas tree lights fire up on the tester, your good to go!
That’s our tip for today, we hope it was a useful one.
