One of the essential components of creating life like structures is weathering. Weathering is the altering of newly modeled structures and prototypes to closely resemble it’s true to life counterpart. There are points on and within your structure that will need attention if you’re considering weathering with any degree of realism.

Most modellers are truly kids at heart. One of the outstanding qualities of youth is the ability to explore your imagination and projecting yourself into different worlds. Many of us are satisfied with the simple operations of our layouts. Cool effects, life like replicas and true to life sounds of our locomotives gliding across rails at scaled down speeds.
Most model railroaders have far more cars (rolling stock) and locomotives than they can possibly operate at once. One option is to simply store excess rolling stock and locomotives in boxes or on display shelves or cabinets. It is possible, however, to store all of your extra equipment and trains on tracks in a yard that may or may not be part of the visible operating portion of your model train layout.

Recently, a customer purchased two of Bachmann’s EMD DDA40X Centennials with DCC on board. It’s a beautiful model compared to older Bachmann locomotives and is quite detailed. The customer had asked us if we could install sound in the engines and as it said “designed for aftermarket sound installation we said yes.

If you ever run across a situation where your model train or trains don’t run… it’s wise to have the knowledge of how your train works under your belt.

If you have a drop in place decoder, testing will require you clamp your (alligator) monster clips to leads on the decoder. Their are attachments designed to assist you in finding the connections. To make this an easy task, the NMRA has harnesses designed for just such a task.

The first step after molding is complete is the fine art of making the ground look real. You will accomplish this by first giving the layout a good brush over of earth toned colors. Apply a light layer over the entire area, or at least the areas you know will be woodland or scenic.
