In 1880 American Lumber expert Ephraim Shaycontracted out  a job to Lima Locomotive Works, known at that time as Lima Machine Works. The three truck 80 ton loco was specifically designed to replace teams of horses and oxen used to transport logs to mills. With her pistons resting on the side of her boiler and her chassis resting on three four wheel trucks, the Shay was one of the most popular locomotives of her era. 

Shays where manufactured until 1945. By the end of their 65 year run Lima Locomotive had built a whopping 2771  steam powered locos that came in in a diverse array of sizes and strengths. many Shays where crafted as narrow gauge locos in order to hang tight in the deep curves of the high woodland and mining terrain. In addition the Shays gearing was designed to climb up steep mountains and hills as well as provide enough power to tote their thick lumber loads. 

Her boiler was offset to the left to allow for its 3 cylindar engine on its right. This unique desing also incorporated a steam powered siphon so the tank could be refillled from lakes and ponds along the lines. 

Another understandable modification was the 80 Ton, Three-Truck Shay's ability to use lumber as a fuel source.
